Selecting the Right Office Chair
Working in an office environment typically involves sitting a great deal of time in an office chair. It is essential that you pick a chair that is ergonomic (see Ergonomic facts), supports your lower back, and promotes feeling better and more energetic at the end of your workday.
1. Seat Height: Office chair height should be easily adjustable. This will allow each user to adjust their chair so their feet are flat on the floor, with your thighs horizontal, and arms even with the height of your desk.
2. Seat Width & Depth: The depth needs to be enough so that the user’s back can be back against the backrest with about 2-4 inches between the back of the knees and the seat of the chair.
3. Lumbar Support: Ergonomic chairs will have lumbar adjustments in both the height and depth so the user can get the right fit to support the inward curve of the lower back.
A few other tips:
1. Don’t go too soft. Your chair should be comfortable but also durable enough to support the user’s weight equally.
2. Chairs with backrests that are height adjustable. This will allow your user to gain proper posture and support.
3. Choose a chair with the right casters for your floor for easy mobility. This may or may not be an issue for all users but each chair will cater to carpet, hard floors, or a combination of both.
